Description
Dokra craft is a lost metal artform that uses wax casting techniques, dating back to over 5000 years. Also known as Bell Metal craft, this ancient artform originated in the Indus Valley Civilization and spread all the way to West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh as well as states like Kerala and Rajasthan. This craft is being practiced by a handful of tribes communities and this centuries old art is fast vanishing due to lack of exposure.
It’s About Crafts is proud to present this art form, to create awareness about the art and the existing artisans. Dokra is known for combining the metallurgical skills with lost wax technique for making artefacts of distinctive look and beauty. The traditional designs are considered highly aesthetic in nature and a collector’s delight. Our collection of Bastar’s Dokra is individually hand crafted by National Award winning master craftsman Shri Rajendra Baghel.
We work directly with the artisans, bypassing middle men and dealers, to ensure maximum amount of profit goes to the communities connected to the art. Most of these artisans are currently living in acute poverty and every sale helps to improve their livelihood and in keeping our heritage alive!
