Tholu Bommalata

Tholu Bommalata is the shadow puppet theatre tradition of the state of Andhra Pradesh with roots dating back to 3rd century BC. The word ‘Tholu’ means leather and ‘Bommalu’ means doll in Telugu.

Artisans today are using Tholu Bommalata motifs to design and make paintings, lamps, wall hangings and small puppets to keep the art form alive in our homes.
