Bengal Dokra

Dariyapur village, in Bardwan city in West Bengal, where artisans are trying to ensure the survival of the craft. Almost every household in this village hand crafts exquisite pieces of Dokra Art. According to local people, the genesis of Dokra craft in Dariyapur goes back to about 120 years ago, when a few families of craftsmen arrived from Odisha (some say from Chhattisgarh region) and settled.

The artisans make a variety of products, from decorative to utility goods to ornaments. Human and animal figurines, gods and goddesses, decorative panels, are a variety to choose from. At present, 133 artisans from Dariyapur practise Dokra craft as an occupation.
